Learn all about Chinchillas

Cozy fleece

Chinchillas naturally live in groups. We recommend that chinchillas live with at least one other. Trios and groups do well too. At Enchanted Chinchilla Rescue, once you are approved to adopt we arrange chinchillas dates to see who will get along, and then provide information to help you with the bonding. Twenty years is a long time to live alone.

Treats

Treats! Of course chinchillas love treats, but be careful there are lots of bad treats sold out there. The best treats are natural such as edible flower treats. Some treats such as little cookies can be given in limitation. Never give, nuts, seeds or store bought treats with added sugar. Unfortunately there are a lot of bad treats sold for chinchillas. Hay

Hay! Hay! And more hay! Do you know hay should be about 80% of a chinchillas diet? A high fiber diet is needed for a healthy gut. Chinchillas can not vomit so high fiber is needed to keep the GI tract moving. Hay plays a big part of keeping a chinchillas teeth trim too.

Dust bath

Chinchillas need a dust bath to keep their fur nice and clean. Add dust to their dust bath and watch them have fun! Dust baths should be given about every three days. Just leave it in their living quarters for a few hours and then remove. NEVER give a chinchilla a bath in water or get them wet.

Hidey houses

Always provide a few, safe hidey houses for your chinchilla. They need a safe place to relax in, sleep in, or just chill out in. Make sure it’s safe. Never use plastic as they can chew it and injest it, which can cause GI stasis problems and even death. This house is made of grass. Available at ChinchillaSupplies.com

Cage

This is the minimum size cage even one chinchilla can live in. Remember they spend a lot of time in their cage. They are very active at night and need a place where they can run, jump and exercise. Plastic ledges will be chewed so cover with fleece. Add wood ledges for places to jump and site. A safe, solid, metal exercise wheel is a must. Everything in the cage must be safe. Provide lots of ledges, chews and tunnels to make their home fun.
